Keep it Wheel

Join us for a ride through the streets of Sydney for the 350.org global day of climate action. We’re celebrating our new cycleways and the art of slow cycling.

Ten teams of ten will fan out across Sydney converging on Centennial Park spreading the love of bikes wherever we go.

Well done!
As well as getting to work on climate solutions, 10:10 aimed to let our politicians know through compelling imagery that we’re ready to get to work, so why aren’t you!?
Hundreds of riders and the picnickers created an image so powerful it’s been featured on the 350.org flickr site. Make sure you order your high-res copy of the photo and a Fair Trade, organic ‘Keep it Wheel’ T-shirt to spread the bike love message.

Big thanks to eskimos Catherine Marshall, Sally Robertson, Yvonne Lee and Vaike Neeme for going above and beyond the call pulling this together.
Bigups to the lads at Elevated Aspects Photography for the camera rig and patience as a virgo creative director art-directed 200 hungry people! Also well done Vegpledgers for the ideas, great food and inviting us to crash your picnic with our pushies!

A picnic in the park
All teams convened at midday in Centennial Park, joining forces with the VegPledge picknickers for an amazing vegetarian feast.
There were some chilled tunes from DJ Luke McCauley using Bo Daley’s portable Solar Powered sound system (thanks to both for donating their time & kit!) plus more good times to be had than spokes on your back wheel.

Saying thank you to businesses on the cycleways
The teams fanned out across Sydney in packs of ten cyclists each with different cycleways along their path. Riders met local business owners and handed out ‘Keep it Wheel’ Business Repair Kits, which consisted of a ‘This is a Bike Friendly Business’ window sticker and a guide to marketing to cyclists. These kits were designed to say “thank you” for putting up with the cycleway construction work while suggesting ways for cafes and stores to crank up their business by becoming cycle culture savvy. continue reading

Keeping it Wheel in Pyrmont

Let the ride begin!
At 10am on Sunday 10th October, Keep it Wheel riders gathered outside iconic Surry Hills cafe Single Origin, enjoying amazing sunshine and delicious iced coffees.
The plan was to show Sydney that cycling is not just great fun, good for your health, the environment and the community, but also an opportunity for the business owners along the new cycle ways. Spirits were high and no lycra was anywhere to be seen.

And this is why we did this

350.org is an international campaign that’s building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis. The focus is on the number 350—as in parts per million CO2. If we can’t get below that, scientists say, the damage we’re already seeing from global warming will continue and accelerate.

Last year, on October 24, 2009, 350.org organized what CNN called “the most widespread day of political action in the planet’s history.” and this year 350 teamed up with the 10:10 campaign for this global day of action.
